Be Smart and Be Secure with Your Smart Device

A Smart device is an electronic device that connects to the internet and interacts with other devices. Smart devices include smartphones, tablets, TV’s, speakers & watches. With these devices you can control a variety of appliances within your home such as lighting, heating, baby monitors, webcams or security alarm systems.

These devices can be used by cybercriminals to access personal information, location data, private business conversations or even security surveillance data, if not secured properly.
How you can secure home devices? To secure your home devices from an attack you should ensure your broadband/wifi has a name and a password which is different from the default settings. Change the default administrator login password and the default wifi name or password on your devices as these are an easy gateway for cybercriminals to attack from.

Always enable two factor authentication on your online accounts as this strengthens their security.

Remember to update the software on your devices when prompted, as this remediates any known security flaws.

Turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it as this could be a potential gateway for cyber criminals to gain access.

If you own a smart speaker, these should be turned off when conducting calls, meetings or discussions on behalf of the firm as some smart speakers can store recordings of conversations.

When working from home, you should only use your own laptop or a mobile device that is registered on Workspace, the firm’s mobile device management platform.

Please ensure your firm issued devices are always connected to your secure VPN solution, Globalprotect. Globalprotect is installed by default on all your laptops and phones to enable you to connect to the your network outside of your office.

Never disable or sign out of Globalprotect as it ensures that your connection to the internet remains private and secure.

If your client is requesting you to connect to their VPN, please contact IT Service Desk for guidance.

Always be mindful of your surroundings by ensuring your device screen or audio content cannot be heard or seen by others. If co-sharing a working environment outside of the office, you should always lock your devices if leaving them unattended.

Remember, if working from a public location you must never leave your device unattended. When your devices are not in use, they should be stored away in a safe place.
